Post Earth Mother and the "gut brain"
What Remo is saying here about the gut brain I find very interesting in what I do with pictures which resonate in the popular culture being reflective of the collective conscious moving in time and history. Had been taking to my son - who teaches math and biology - about the gut brain and how it explains how the ancient rituals of the churches incorporat by symbolic action (Sacrifice of Mass/human and animal sacrifice) ancient states of mind or being that may relate to the gut brain. In hunter culture women's menstrual cycles were collectively synchronized with the full moon because the men went to hunt under the light of the full moon and were away then. In this the gut brain manifests as the EArth Mother and the human is connected to the earth in pictures of mother (earth) and child (representing the human population). The Mother is virtually the earth itself and the human felt connected until becoming disconnected. In our time and historic trajectory, this can be very directed observed in representative pictures.

This picture expresses the natural world of the European in the 12th century. The child is attached to mother. The mother here in Shadow as if she comes from the Unconscious as in a dream. The Mother's garments flow across the earth like roots.

But by the Renaissance the Catholic Church - Innocent II - rose to conquest and commissioned Michaelangelo and Leonardo to advertize his realm. Leonardo disliked the task and made the Mother childless (Mona Lisa, detaching child from mother and in another replacing child with a weasel). Michaelangelo rose to the task and ripped the child from mother's arms in disgust, the better "to sere the Warrior Pope" he wrote in his diaries. Edinger makes this point and uses this picture as well in "Apocalypse and the ARchetype."n

By the 1950s when American economic power was rising to pinnacle, the earth mother was seen by Thomas Mann in relationship with power as an insane woman; Alan Ginsberg as well - Norman Mailer had it a psychiatrist and a prostitute - people were completely divorced from the mother earth and the gut brain. DeKooning, most representative of that period. Here is one of his called "Woman" in a series, the relationship entirely shattered.

But Dali and his Surrealist friends broke free of the traditions and formed a sanga to go their own way. This commissioned portrait of Isabel has the woman fully incorporated with the earth and mirroring the earth - note the mandala the woman wears - it is internalized earth; the woman is the mountain and the mountain is the woman. The gut brain is awakened. Might be noted as per Patrick's dream posted yesterday that Freud hated the Surrealists and said they were mad. Jung admired and encouraged them

And this, which might be in time considered the last day of the age, Dec. 8, 1980, Child and Madonna are again together. The woman in black - from the Unconscious - as in the original 12th century picture.
