ESSAY TITLE: From Negative Science and Compensating Myth to Positive Science and Scientific Cultural Consciousness

Paul Budding

Introduction

There is more reason than ever before to simply accept scientific cultural consciousness as opposed to taking psychological medicines (i.e., traditional religion, myth). Psychological medicines have been taken in order to compensate for cruel nature. In the 18th century the scientific revolution destroyed many people’s faith in God and an afterlife. Hence compensatory psychology grew out of that fact. For example it led to Carl Jung’s psychology and it led to philosophical existentialism. In general we have psychologically evolved from participation mystique between subject and object to projection from the subject onto the object. For example saying that you do not believe in the literal truth of the bible - while maintaining Christianity’s numinous psychological feeling - equates to a projection. It is a projection of meaning onto an object.
Of course technological science was doing good things from its beginning. For example it was extending life expectancy. However, this was too slow for people and disease and death was still inevitable thus fuelling those compensatory systems of thought. Now in the early 21st century we no longer need to compensate for science. This is because technological science is advancing so quickly that it really is becoming a ‘saviour’. This is its trend. Therefore we can put our faith into technological science. And this is not a ‘blind faith’. As said, it is a faith built upon technological scientific trends. Technological growth is now very fast and this includes medical technological growth. Therefore we are fast reaching a point whereby a stated original life expectancy figure has moved ahead to a much larger figure when you reach the original figure. This is a trend occurring right now. So psychologically-speaking... rather than feel that science is negative in the sense of vanquishing cherished beliefs in God, the afterlife, telling us that we descend from apes... we can now accept scientific cultural consciousness because it is positive and is at our service. Technological medical science promises to vanquish disease and death. In the early 21st century this is a faith but not a blind faith. By around 2030 this will not even be a faith. It will be a fact.
In this paper we will outline the psychological trend from participation mystique and then projection and then finally towards scientific cultural consciousness. It is not being argued that all modern individuals reflect this path. It is merely the psychological trend. However it is argued that those stuck in former stages may someday feel the need to break free. This is certainly my advice for anyone who experiences a conflict and needs to make a choice to jump one way or the other. As for the technological science these are trends that inevitably turn into factual reality.
